America 250 Bookmark Design Challenge for Kids

If youโ€™re looking for a simple, meaningful activity to get your kids involved in the America 250 celebration, this is one you wonโ€™t want to miss. The National Endowment for the Arts has launched a nationwide Bookmark Design Challenge just for kidsโ€”and itโ€™s the kind of low-pressure, creative opportunity thatโ€™s perfect for busy families.

The contest is open to all students in grades Kโ€“8, including homeschoolers, and invites kids to design an original, hand-drawn bookmark showing what America means to them. Whether your child wants to highlight history, family heritage, cultural traditions, or even their hopes for the future, the theme is intentionally flexible so they can make it personal.

Hereโ€™s what parents need to know: entries must be completely original and created by hand (no digital or AI-generated artwork allowed), and kids must use the official bookmark template provided by the NEA. Each child can submit one design, and a parent or guardian must upload the final entry along with a simple acknowledgment formโ€”teachers canโ€™t submit on their behalf. Designs should also avoid things like logos, political messages, or personal information to be eligible.

The deadline is March 31, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET, so this is a great quick-turn project to squeeze in before spring gets too busy. Winners will be selected in three age groups (Kโ€“2, 3โ€“5, and 6โ€“8), and their bookmarks will actually be printed and shared at national events, including the Great American State Fair. Even more exciting, winners will be invited to Washington, D.C. with a parent for a special celebration.

What I love most about this challenge is how doable it is. Thereโ€™s no long essay, no complicated rulesโ€”just a piece of paper, some crayons or markers, and your childโ€™s perspective. Itโ€™s a small project that gives kids a chance to feel part of a once-in-a-generation moment, and honestly, those are the kinds of opportunities that stick.

So if you need a creative activity this week, this is your signโ€”print the template, set out the art supplies, and see what your kids come up with.

Outschool Review: Flexible Learning Options for Families

In todayโ€™s fast-changing digital world, education is no longer confined to traditional classrooms. One platform leading this shift is Outschool, an innovative online learning marketplace designed specifically for children and teens. This platform is for students who are home schooled, traditionally school, and anything in between. The classes have small ratios, they include one on one courses and are largely interest driven, although many adhere to common core standards. For me and my family, Iโ€™ve found Outschool to be not only a great platform to teach on, but also a wonderful place for kids to explore classes that genuinely interest them. Itโ€™s an excellent supplement to any educational program. I originally joined as a teacher, but I quickly realized itโ€™s also a vibrant space for children to socialize, expand their knowledge, and build community.

What Is Outschool?

Founded in 2015, Outschool is an online platform that connects learners aged 3 to 18 with independent educators from around the world. Unlike conventional e-learning programs that follow a fixed curriculum, Outschool operates as a marketplace. Teachers design and list their own classes, and parents can browse and enroll their children based on interests, age range, schedule, and budget.

The platform hosts live, small-group classes conducted over video chat. These sessions are interactive rather than pre-recorded, allowing students to engage directly with teachers and peers. Class sizes are intentionally small, which encourages participation, discussion, and personalized attention.

What Subjects Does Outschool Offer?

One of Outschoolโ€™s biggest strengths is its diversity of topics. While it certainly covers core academic subjects like math, science, reading, and writing, it truly shines in enrichment and niche interests. Students can take classes in coding, creative writing, foreign languages, art, music, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and even unique topics like mythology, marine biology, or game design.

There are also social clubs and ongoing classes, such as book clubs, gaming groups, and debate circles. This makes the platform appealing not just for academic growth but also for social interaction and community-building, especially for homeschoolers or children seeking peers with shared interests.

Who Is Outschool For?

Outschool is designed for families who want flexibility and personalization in their childโ€™s education. Homeschooling families often use it to supplement their curriculum or outsource certain subjects. Traditional school families may enroll their children in after-school enrichment classes or summer learning programs. Itโ€™s also popular among parents looking to nurture a specific talent or passion their child may not be able to explore in a standard school environment.

Because classes are live and interactive, students who thrive in discussion-based settings tend to benefit the most. However, the variety of teaching styles available means parents can find classes suited to different learning preferences.

I can personally vouch for the language lessons, theater, art, gaming club, coding and science. Right now, Outschool is sending out civics’ lessons and materials to families who use the platform. My daughter is starting a self-paced Mars class this week, and I have found the gaming club to be a great way to socialize for introverts.

Maryland and FSA Funding, Why They Don’t Qualify

Marylandโ€™s education system is built on a โ€œpublic dollars stay in public schoolsโ€ philosophy. The state does not offer ESAs, vouchers, or flexible education accounts, and it does not allow public funds to follow students into private, online, or supplemental learning platforms. Because Outschool is considered a private, parentโ€‘selected enrichment marketplaceโ€”and Maryland does not fund private educational servicesโ€”there is no legal pathway for families to use state money on the platform. In short, Outschool is ready, but Marylandโ€™s funding structure isnโ€™t designed for it. What do you think of that? Is It Right For You? Modern Challenges and Opportunities in School Choice

If the country is moving to a merit-based society, that is great. However, there are some places that will need to modernize their infrastructure. But in the meantime, we like to get in motion as much as we can until the pendulum swings in our favor. 

As a child, my parents chose where we lived based on the school district alone. When my mother was just starting out in her career and had to work nights at the hospital, she would do something that I actually could not do: she would drive from the city to the suburbsโ€”a forty-minute commute to Ann Arbor just so I could go to school where she felt I would get the best education. The irony was that there was a school right on the corner where my grandmother lived, but my mom wanted a school where I could be creative and thrive. I actually moved around quite a bit as a child, but each choice was made based on education. Admittedly, no one should have to deal with those extremes, but throughout history, parents have made sacrifices whenever they could to ensure their childrenโ€™s success. Today, you have that opportunity with school choiceโ€”if that is the choice you would like to make.  It is not for everyone, but it is an option that could shore up a need for your child. Also, there are all kinds of reasons a parent may want to change their kids schools. Maybe their gifted, play an instrument, are inclined to science, or need special education; the list goes on. But I donโ€™t personally believe you should be caged in for any reason. School choice is not solely economic to me, itโ€™s about access and exposure because we all learn and thrive from each other.  

A Trajectory of Choice 

We often think of “School Choice” as a modern political debate, but in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was the only reality. Before the “Common School” movement of the mid-1800s, education was a decentralized tapestry. Families “chose” through homeschooling, private academies, or community-funded one-room schoolhouses. 

Notably, in many underserved communities, the most effective models were the women-led, Black-led schoolhouses. These weren’t just buildings; they were centers of self-determination where the curriculum was tied to the communityโ€™s survival and success. When the public system was eventually standardized, many of these intimate, effective models were lost in favor of a “one-size-fits-all” factory model. 

The Equity Gap Post-Brown v. Board 

The landmarkย Brown v. Board of Educationย decision was a victory for desegregation, but its failure was the lack ofย equanimity. We integrated the students, but weย didnโ€™tย integrate the resources. Decades later, a childโ€™s zip code still largelyย determinesย the quality of theirย schoolโ€™sย roof, the depth of their library, and the safety of their halls.ย 

This is where the agency of choice shores up the gaps. Choice should work both ways: we must invest tax dollars to build up and modernize our neighborhood schools so they become places of pride once again. But while that infrastructure is being rebuilt, parents need the “motion” of choice to ensure their child isn’t left behind in a failing building. 

Diversity as an Asset 

True diversity is not just racialโ€”it is a diversity of thought, talent, and pedagogical approach. Some children thrive in a traditional classroom; others need a vocational-heavy environment or a specialized arts curriculum. When we allow funding to follow the student, we encourage a marketplace of ideas that benefits everyone. Choice isn’t a mandate; itโ€™s an option that respects the diverse needs of the modern family. 

The Landscape in Maryland Today (2026) 

In Maryland, this “motion” is happening through programs like BOOST (Broadening Options and Opportunities for Students Today). As of 2026, BOOST provides scholarships to nearly 3,000 low-income students, allowing them to attend participating non-public schools that fit their specific needs. 

While Maryland is currently making historicย $10 billionย investments into public school modernization via the “Blueprint for Marylandโ€™s Future,” the BOOST program acts as a vital bridge. It offers immediate relief and equity for families whoย can’tย wait a decade for a building to be renovated.ย 

How it works in MD: 

  • Eligibility:ย Primarily based on Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FARMs) status.ย 
  • The Process:ย Parentsย submitย Federal 1040 tax returns to verify income.ย 
  • The Outcome:ย The scholarship follows the student to an eligible private or community-led school, covering or significantly offsetting tuition.ย 

Education is the engine of a merit-based society. By supporting both our public infrastructure and the individual right to choose, we ensure that the next generation doesn’t have to drive forty minutes away just to find a fair start.

Celebrate Chinese New Year 2026: Fun Traditions for Kids

Exploring new cultures is the best thing. If you can’t leave your hometown, the good news is you can use social media and your local community to explore things around you. In our home, we love Chinese New Year. We love the bright red decorations, the exciting traditions, and most of allโ€ฆ the red packets! Chinese New Year is a special celebration that marks the start of a new year based on the lunar calendar, and in 2026 it begins on February 17. This year welcomes the Year of the Horse, an animal that represents energy, adventure, and confidence. Even kids can feel that exciting โ€œfresh startโ€ feeling when Chinese New Year arrives.

Chinese New Year is also called Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, and itโ€™s celebrated by families all over the world. Before the holiday, people often clean their homes to sweep away old luck and make room for good fortune. Homes are decorated with red and gold because red is believed to bring happiness, luck, and protection. During the celebration, families gather to eat delicious food, spend time together, and wish each other health and joy for the year ahead.

One of the most exciting traditions for children is receiving red packets, also called hongbao. These are bright red envelopes usually given by parents, grandparents, or other adults. Inside is money, but the most important part isnโ€™t how much is inside, itโ€™s the loving wish for good luck, happiness, and success in the new year. Kids often wait eagerly for these envelopes and opening them feels like a little burst of magic and celebration.

The Year of the Horse makes this Chinese New Year extra fun to talk about with kids. Horses are known for being fast, strong, and adventurous, so itโ€™s a great time to encourage children to be brave, try new things, and run toward their dreams. You can even ask kids what kind of year they hope to have โ€” a year full of fun, learning, kindness, or exciting adventures.

To celebrate at home, a simple and meaningful craft kids can do is making their own lucky red envelope. Using red paper, fold it into an envelope shape and glue or tape the sides, leaving the top open. Kids can decorate their envelopes with drawings of horses, gold designs, sparkles, or even try writing the Chinese character ็ฆ (fรบ), which means good luck. Inside, they can place a handwritten wish, a drawing, or a pretend coin. Itโ€™s a lovely way for kids to understand the tradition while creating something personal and festive.

Chinese New Year is a celebration filled with color, joy, and hope, and sharing these traditions at home helps children learn about the world while making warm family memories. Whether itโ€™s opening red packets, making crafts, or simply talking about the Year of the Horse, itโ€™s a beautiful reminder that a new year always brings new possibilities.

In Bethesda, Westfield Montgomery hosts the Chinese Culture and Community Service Centerโ€™s celebration with dragon and lion dances, calligraphy blessings, clay dumpling crafts, and red envelope giveaways. Strathmoreโ€™s Music Center offers a festive concert with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, while Connie Morella Library invites children to storytime, crafts, and songs.

Gaithersburg brings a unique twist with the Mintd Card Show at the Marriott Washingtonian Centerโ€”featuring Pokรฉmon vendors, raffles, and Lunar New Year-themed prizes. Across the county, you can also support local Asian restaurants, bakeries, and bubble tea shops to keep the celebration going.

Every topic weโ€™ve exploredโ€”economics, faith, womenโ€™s financial autonomy, the politics of truthโ€”has really been a study in memory. Who remembers. Who forgets. Who gets written into the story of a nation, a family, a church, an economy. And who has to fight to be seen. At its core, this work is about how memory shapes identity, and how identity shapes the choices women make in a world that is always negotiating power. Truth is one of the most powerful forms of currency.

What looks like separate topics between economics, Catholic spirituality, womenโ€™s financial literacy, truth and transformation, has always been one conversation. Weโ€™ve been studying the point of convergence: where memory becomes identity, where identity becomes history, and where history becomes story. At that crossroads, women make choices that reveal who they are and what they believe. This is the terrain where truth is chosen, not inherited. Therefore, when you understand the world, you can make choices in it. Also, there are so many women that have been martyrs and leaders, and they go unnoticed and unwritten about today.

Edessa, Upper Mesopotamia, St. Barbea

Convergence is the moment when spiritual truth, political pressure, and personal identity collide โ€” and the choice you make reveals who you are. Few places in the ancient world embodied this collision more fully than Edessa. Born from the collapse of empires, it rose on a fault line of history a frontier city where Arab kings, Roman legions, and Persian armies contested not only territory but allegiance. Perched between worlds, Edessa functioned as both buffer and battleground, a place where control depended less on walls than on the loyalty of its people. Shifting between Parthian, Armenian, and Roman rule, the city learned early that power here was provisional: armies could occupy its streets, but belief determined whether authority endured. January 29th is the feast day of St. Barbea who is honored here today.

Saint Barbea of Edessa: Holding To Conviction

Saint Barbea of Edessa was an early Christian martyr from Syria, remembered primarily for her courage during the persecutions under Emperor Trajan. She was the sister of Saint Sarbelius and was converted to Christianity through the influence of Saint Barsimeus, a prominent Christian leader in Edessa.

Once she embraced the faith, Barbea practiced it openly despite the intense hostility toward Christians at the time. Her refusal to renounce Christ led to her arrest and brutal torture. According to tradition, she endured:

  • burning with hot irons
  • severe scourging
  • and ultimately death by spear

Throughout these ordeals, she remained unwavering in her devotion.

Barbea is considered a preโ€‘congregation saint, meaning her veneration predates the formal canonization process of the Catholic Church. She has no specific patronage or iconographic symbols associated with her, but her legacy endures through the commemoration of her feast day on January 29. She is honored as a model of loyalty, courage, and steadfast faith, especially among those who look to the early martyrs for inspiration. Her story stands as a testament to the strength of conviction and the power of belief in the face of persecution.

The Confluence of Art and Media: How Art Will Meet The Moment

This site is a holistic media endeavor. Soon, it will be opened up to even more minds and opinions. That is not only how community meets the moment, but art. Art and media are two conjoined halves in my opinion. They function best when they’re interdependent. In our politically charged society we have the opportunity to mine the fields for problems and see where art can tell a different story and advance a better future.

I taught a workshop on technology and art for the Womenโ€™s Caucus for Art a couple of years ago. I am an advocate for digital tools, artificial intelligence, and digital art and sales. I believe there are not only creative, but fiscal, opportunities available within this genre.

Traditional Art Practices


While in-person engagement with art is increasing and traditional forms remain a mainstay of the status quo, the digital world is still evolving. There is as much possibility there as the mind can imagine, and I champion it. Throughout history, art has always faced attack. Artists are close to the Creator โ€”they bring forth the unseen. That is a great deal of power.

So will art survive the moment with integrity and dignity? Of course they will. They are the moment.


It’s also comforting to know that artists still retain control over what they make and how they choose to say it. Artists are needed. Art is the baseline of all innovation, while words shape the language around it. Together, they form the rhetorical world-building pillars of society.


If I had a question, it would be this: how will art rise to the occasion? How will it shape new narratives? Through UNESCO we can study cultural globally and how to preserve it, yet what arw futurists envisioning now? We have spent a fair amount of time uncovering problems and successfully answering some of them. How do we take it a step further while building our own magical society? That is the power of art. I will always be a believer in the small steps. The small details. The small wins.

I believe in each brick that carefullt builds out our daily dreams and lives.

Preserving Gullah Geechee Culture Amid Climate Change

Along the sun-soaked shores, tidal creeks, and marshlands of the southeastern United States, a remarkable culture continues to thrive. Rooted in African traditions and shaped by centuries of resilience, Gullah Geechee culture connects the United States to the broader African diaspora through language, food, music, spirituality, and a deep relationship with the land.

The Gullah Geechee people are descendants of enslaved Africans brought to the Sea Islands and coastal mainland of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Isolated by geography but strengthened by community, they preserved customs, stories, and a Creole language that survived slavery, segregation, and generations of displacement. Today, that legacy faces a new and urgent threat: climate change and land loss.

Recent news coverage has highlighted rising seas and intensifying storms threatening Gullah Geechee communities. But these headlines point to a deeper truth that this is not only an environmental crisis, but a cultural one. What is at stake is a living heritage that deserves recognition and protection on a global scale, including consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status.

Voices from the Community: Why Gullah Geechee Matters

For the Gullah Geechee people, preservation is personal. It lives in the voices of elders, artists, and community leaders who carry traditions passed down for generations.

Her words reflect the importance of Gullah spirituals โ€” songs that hold history, faith, and survival in their melodies.

At public meetings and planning forums, advocates often remind us that there is no price tag on cultural heritage. As many have said plainly: without the land, the culture dies. For the Gullah Geechee, land is not just property โ€” it is memory, identity, and continuity.

Why UNESCO World Heritage Status Matters

UNESCO World Heritage recognition would place Gullah Geechee culture alongside some of the worldโ€™s most valued cultural landscapes โ€” from the rice terraces of the Philippines to the ancient city of Timbuktu. More importantly, it would provide global acknowledgment, protection, and resources for preservation.

As I step into a new year, the idea of establishing a new way of living, thinking, and moving in our ever-shifting world feels both daunting and exhilarating. The world around us is in constant flux, with changes happening at an unprecedented pace. In such times, establishing a firm foundation in our lives becomes crucial. This year, I aim to explore what it means to create a life rooted in stability, while also considering the dynamic nature of scaling which is a concept often associated with rapid growth and expansion.

Establishing vs. Scaling: A Delicate Balance

The word “establish” resonates with a sense of permanence and solidity. It suggests planting roots, creating a foundation, and building something that can withstand the test of time. Establishing a new way of living means consciously choosing values and practices that ground us, even as the world around us continues to evolve. It’s about finding what truly matters and nurturing those aspects, allowing them to flourish and provide us with a sense of stability.

On the other hand, “scaling” is often associated with speed and agility. It implies quick growth, adaptability, and the ability to expand rapidly. In our fast-paced world, scaling is essential for staying relevant and seizing opportunities. However, scaling without a solid foundation can lead to instability. Therefore, it’s important to strike a delicate balance between the two: establishing a core that can support growth, while remaining flexible enough to adapt to change.

As we embark on this journey of establishing a new way of living, it’s important to embrace change with intention. This means being mindful of the shifts happening around us and within us, and consciously choosing how we respond. As we navigate this new year, let’s consider what it means to establish a life that is both deeply rooted and capable of growth. By finding the balance between establishing and scaling, we can create a future that is both stable and adaptable, providing us with the strength and flexibility to thrive in a shifting world.

Taste The Flavor of Good Chop ๐Ÿฅฉ

My First Box Delivery (Medium)

My delivery from Good Chop arrived the other day and it did not disappoint. First of all the delivery was seamless. And in this porch pirate climate, that is something that stands out.

My items arrived sealed tight and ice cold. Last night we made the burgers. I wanted to go outside and grill them, but it was freezing. It was a skillet adventure and it didn’t disappoint.

Just so you know, this is organic meat from American farms. Why does this matter? You would be surprised how much of our meat is imported. In 2022, the largest import of monthly beef came from  Brazil.  I am a believer in building up where I live,  since I have to live here. Besides, this was one of the most delicious pieces of ground beef I have had in awhile. I think that buying local is one of the best ways to build up your area. That’s actually how it gets done–with your actual dollars. I learned this from sitting on a few of my city’s committee’s.

I actually live around quite a few farms and I plan to bring my support even more local. I want to try Kosher butchers and vegetable CSA’s. I have known about this for years but the frugal person in me would never do it. Then I thought about how much I ran to Whole Foods and decided to run some numbers. The math more than worked out. I was also inspired to do this because I was part of aย group that worked with Creation Justice Ministries. This ministry sees the beauty of the environment and preserving God’s creation and bringing about justice through small acts.ย 

Last summer, there was a talk I went to one time about “communion” and it framed the act of farm to table as an act of communion and community. It was such a beautiful concept that I felt like this is absolutely the way it should be. Why should we watch farmers on television talk about their needs when we can help them and ourselves. I personally believe that better quality leads to less waste.

QUALITY OVER EVERYTHING

A neighbor of mine grows tomatoes and served them to us at a party. Those tomatoes tasted like candy. I couldn’t stop eating them. These are not tomatoes I would waste. The watery tomatoes, maybe, not these.

To Be Strong And of Good Courage, The Most Admirable Trait of Them All

What is something others do that sparks your admiration?

We live in a world where the bullies run anti-bullying campaigns, people with unchecked mental health are preaching health and wellness, and the unhealed are navigating folks through healing journeys. Thatโ€™s just the beginning.

These ironic themes that pepper our existence have gone on for quite some time. We have allowed it to perpetuate while residing in a sleep state they keep calling โ€œawakened.โ€ In actuality it can be semantics to some degree. If you are operating against your interests to some degree, your lids are still a little low. Itโ€™s time to rise and see.

The Real Hero

The hero is always the person strong enough, brave enough, and bad enough to stand up and tell the Truth. The truth has a ring to it and it garners the respect of the people.

Itโ€™s hard to come to grips with the truth because for so long not only do we not acknowledge what we are seeing, feeling and experiencingโ€”we actively work against our betterment and then complain about it. In my opinion, itโ€™s better to have someone say, โ€œhey, I donโ€™t really like you, but I want you to be safe.โ€ Instead of, โ€œof course I have no problem with you. Youโ€™re amazing and you are welcome anytime!โ€ While doing everything in their power to harm me or covertly erect barriers to my true success.

This is the gaslighting hidden behind the โ€œgas face.โ€ Donโ€™t get me wrong towing the line has its advantages. You get to live largely without static. But, the moment you answer the call of truth get ready for some pushback. Most of us have no idea that we live in a state of quasi-mediocrity at times. Itโ€™s because we preach that Christ was once a benevolent meditating shaman-esque archetype, who now resides in heaven, and is patting the heads of all the goody-two shoes down here on Earth. Thatโ€™s not true. Thatโ€™s the sugar laden milk we feed the little kids to get them excited about something they donโ€™t understand fully. You donโ€™t chastise the church, call people out, and tell people who are struggling to โ€œrise and be healed.โ€ You donโ€™t really beat up benevolent people who live on the outskirts of society quietly restoring the sight of blind people and raising dead people up. That guy would be considered a one man non-profit if he needed the cash. (Apparently a rich man, paid for his proper burial after he died. But as we know, he was already gone. Still a nice gesture though.)When someone like that is in your midst you go and see about the person who is disrupting the status quo, and getting the lame off the streets. Especially when, to some degree, someone feels their abject poverty serves a purpose.

I talk about Christ a lot because the more you know Him, the more you begin to believe in the unbelievable. As a self-crowned theologian, I like to compare his early church wisdom teachings, that rattled the cage of every double-minded individual of his time, to the calm and loving genie he is often reduced to today. I like old Jesus better. The more you think you know, you realize you know nothing. Thatโ€™s a good thing.

See, if you donโ€™t tell the truth about the most courageous person who suffered intolerable cruelty and humiliation for sticking to his gunsโ€”youโ€™ll never understand the suffering in your own life. Regardless of whatever marketing campaign or social media influencer mantra that we are force fedโ€”every person living is subjected to suffering. Everyone. No person alive, due to money, status, ethnicity is able to escape suffering because death meets us all. It is one of the reasons I am a student of eschatology,because itโ€™s best to get comfortable with that fact. It also allows you to have compassion for your fellow man.

To know God is to suffer with Him.โ€

At times, while we are speaking a truth to power, we are then harmed and temporarily dismantled. Yet somehow we become more refined, and even more beautiful and courageous, through our trials. This is the hope of our calling.

The Courageous

I admire the courageous. The ones that can walk away from a tough situation that erodes their self respect. I also admire the steadfast and unmovable. The ones that are willing to be martyred for a cause. The ones that resist the goading and temptation of the enemy and cause the unrighteous to flee.

Sometimes standing is stronger than running and silence is more powerful than words.

My question today is, what truth do you stand on in this moment ? What principles are you willing to fall on your sword for even if it means losing those closest to you?

Take a moment before you answer:

Do you love what you see when you look yourself in the eyes? Are you able to live with your choices and the truth of who you are? If so, then you win the gift of perfect peace and more.

If not, the challenge for you is to keep pushing. Keep digging. Keep being honest until you are fearless. On the other side of your fearlessness is faith and after thatโ€”your real life.
